Common baking ingredients

Here’s a compiled list of baking ingredients you’ll want around the kitchen so you can bake on a whim (and usually avoid a trip to the store).

1. Sugars/sweeteners (usually in the “wet team”)

  • Brown sugar
  • Granulated (white) sugar
  • Powdered sugar
  • Honey/agave
  • Maple syrup
  • Molasses

2. Flour (“dry team”)

  • AP flour (all purpose)
  • Cake flour
  • Whole wheat flour
  • Cornmeal

3. Spices (in ground/powder form unless specified otherwise — added with dry team)

  • Cinnamon
  • Ginger
  • Allspice
  • Cloves
  • Cardamom powder
  • Nutmeg
  • Black pepper
  • Pumpkin pie mix (2 tbsp cinnamon, 1 tbsp ginger, 2 tsp nutmeg, 1 tsp cloves, 1/4 tsp salt)
  • Chili Powder (1/4 cup ancho chile powder, 1/4 cup red New Mexico chile powder, 2 tbsp ground cumin, 2 tbsp onion powder, 2 tbsp oregano, 1 tbsp chipotle chile powder, 1 tbsp garlic powder, 1 tsp allspice)
  • Apple pie spice mix (1/4 cup cinnamon, 4 tsp allspice, 2 tsp nutmeg, 2 tsp mace, 1 tsp cloves)
  • Cocoa powder

4. Extracts (wet team)

  • Vanilla
  • Mint
  • Almond
  • Lemon

5. Chemical agents (dry team)

  • Salt
  • Baking powder
  • Baking soda
  • Cream of tartar
  • Eggs (or egg substitute)
  • Cornstarch

6. Wet team additions

  • Milk (or milk substitute)
  • Sweetened condensed milk
  • Applesauce
  • Butter
  • Canola Oil
  • Oil spray to prevent muffins from sticking to pans (ex: high heat canola spray oil)

7. Dry team additions

  • Dried coconut flakes
  • Nuts (walnuts, pecans, peanuts, almonds, pistachios)
  • Chocolate chips/baking chocolate
  • Dried fruit (apple, cranberries, mango)
  • Oatmeal or rolled oats
  • Seeds (poppy, sesame, sunflower)
